The Complete Guide to Aluminium Anodising

Aluminium anodising is an electrochemical process that enhances the metal’s natural oxide layer, making it more durable, corrosion-resistant, and aesthetically appealing. Widely used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics, anodising transforms aluminium into a superior material for various applications. In this article, we’ll explore: -What anodising is and how it works -Different types of anodising -Benefits of anodised aluminium -Common applications -DIY anodising (basic overview)

What is Aluminium Anodising?

Anodising is the creation of an oxide layer on the surface of aluminium by electro-chemical means. This oxide layer protects the underlying metal and prevents further corrosion from taking place. An additional benefit of this process is that the oxide layer that is created will accept certain dyes, thus allowing aluminium items to be finished in a wide range of colours.

How Does It Work?

  1. Cleaning – The aluminium part is thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, grease, and impurities.
  2. Etching – The surface is treated with an alkaline or acidic solution to create a uniform texture.
  3. Anodising – The aluminium is submerged in an electrolyte bath and an electric current is applied, forming a porous oxide layer.
  4. Dyeing (Optional) – The porous layer can absorb dyes for colouring.
  5. Sealing – The part is sealed with hot water or steam to close the pores, enhancing durability.

Benefits of Anodised Aluminium

✔ Corrosion Resistance – Withstands harsh environments better than raw aluminium.
✔ Durability – Anodised parts can last decades without degradation.
✔ Aesthetic Versatility – Available in multiple colours.
✔ Electrical Insulation – The oxide layer is non-conductive.
✔ Eco-Friendly – No harmful VOCs (unlike paint).

Common Applications of Anodised Aluminium

  • Aerospace – Aircraft components for lightweight strength
  • Automotive – Trim, wheels, and engine parts
  • Electronics – Smartphones, laptops (e.g., MacBook casings)
  • Architecture – Window frames, façades, and roofing
  • Industrial Machinery – Wear-resistant components
  • DIY & Custom Parts – Bike frames, firearm accessories, jewellery

Anodise Aluminium at Home or in Your Workshop

The system has been designed from scratch to provide an easy and safe method for the amateur to successfully anodise aluminium at a low cost. All the latest developments in chemicals and electronics have been integrated into the design to produce excellent results. The system utilises electronic control of the current supplied to the anodising tank, and due to the low voltage involved there is no risk of electric shock. The power supply has built in electronic protection to prevent damage should fault conditions arise. Aluminium items that have been cast are not able to be anodised. Our anodising kits includes:

  • Anodising tank
  • Anodising solution (2, 5 and 10 litres are available)
  • Anodising cathode set
  • Anodising power supply control unit
  • Aluminium rod set
  • 2 tank support rod sets
  • 2 croc clip support sets
  • Scourer powder
  • Dyeing tank
  • Coloured dye for deluxe kits (1L makes 5 litres)
  • Dyeing tank heater
  • Dyeing tank agitator
  • Mask
  • Gloves
  • Eye protection glasses
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Instructions

⚠ Safety First! Always wear gloves, eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area.

Anodising is a game-changer for aluminium, enhancing its strength, appearance and longevity. Whether for industrial use or DIY projects, understanding the process helps in choosing the right finish for your needs.
